2016 Gathering to be held September 7th through 9th. This year is another historic year for the Wyandotte Nation with the Grand Opening of our Cultural Center on Friday. Be a part of the lighting of the eternal flame. See the beautiful panels that tell our story from long ago to current. All Wyandotte Citizens, Kansas Wyandots, and Wyandots of Anderdon, as well as spouses, are welcome to attend. You won’t want to miss this event.
On Wednesday hear who the Keepers of the Council Fire were and Thursday come see history come alive with Mathew Mudeater and other citizens from our past. Dr. Steckley returns with “Keys to the Wyandotte Language”. Come bead a medallion, make a choker, weave a basket, learn what is new with women’s traditional dress and see various finger weaving styles. Those interested in finger weaving can sign up for a one-on-one session. Start your own Medicine Book – a method used to collect personal, family and tribal related documents, history and related information. Crafts and games will be available for Little Turtles age 12 and under. If you have a project from a past Gathering, such as a shawl, bandolier, belt, basket or beading you need help with, or time to work on to finish, bring it with you. There will be help available to get you going again, and time to hopefully complete before the end of the Gathering. There will be many opportunities throughout the Gathering to visit with friends, meet new friends, make connections with family, and meet family you didn’t realize were family. You will also have the opportunity to show off your special moves in social dancing; Shawn King will be coming to help lead everyone. If dancing is not your thing, feel free to socialize with others. Wednesday we will have dinner at the Community Center and after dinner we will have story time and show-and-tell. If you have a favorite Wyandotte story, family story, or any Wyandotte items you would like to share, we would love to hear/see them. Thursday evening events will be announced as we get closer to the event.
Due to the Grand Opening of the Cultural Center on Friday, activities on Wednesday and Thursday will be held in the Bearskin Gym and at the Community Center. Thursday morning we will have a field trip offsite.
Wednesday check in: 8:30 – 9:00 Welcome: 9:00
