Just in time for Memorial Day, the Wyandotte Nation made a $1,000 donation to the Northeast Oklahoma Veterans Memorial Cemetery, located just north of Miami, Okla.
“We’ve helped this organization in the past. It is an organization we’ve always strongly supported,” Wyandotte Nation Chief Billy Friend said. “We believe in taking care of our veterans and their causes. It has been a long tradition of ours, if we have the ability to help a veterans’ organization, the board of directors will support these causes.”
Cmdr. Clifford Barnes said they appreciated the donation and will use it toward building their fence at the cemetery.
“We’re working on the cemetery now, we’re about through with it as far as the fence goes. The rest of it is ready,” Barnes said, adding plots are available to veterans and their spouses. “We’d like 1,200 more feet so we’ll need more to finish this fence up.”
The Wyandotte Nation Board of Directors approved the donation. The Board consists of Chief Friend, Second Chief Norman Hildebrand, Jr., and councilpersons Vivian Fink, Eric Lofland, Juanita McQuistion and Ramona Reid.
